Moving is an exciting time. It’s the first step towards a new location with the opportunity to explore and meet new people. On the other hand, moving comes with a lot of change. Moving can be a little stressful, but with a little help, you’ll get through it.

Make A Plan

There is an old adage in the moving industry… “If you can’t see where you’re going, you’re heading for trouble”

Moving your home and family requires some forward thinking to plan for all of the tasks that need to be completed before move date. From picking a mover to deciding on what items to keep or trash, it helps to have a written plan to minimize unforeseen issues. We’ve created a Timeline Checklist you can download below to help start your plan.

Find A Reputable Mover

Picking a reputable mover is important. Like many industries, there are many moving companies that aren’t what they appear to be. There are many resources for you to research movers besides looking at reviews on Google & other sites. One website that has some great tips for choosing a reputable Pennsylvania mover is the PA Moving & Storage Association. PMSA’s mission is to represent the interest of the moving and storage industry throughout Pennsylvania and to help the customers it serves. PMSA standard for membership is higher than that of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.

Our owner, Rodney Pursell, is one of the many officers of the association.

Hire a Mover or DIY?

Deciding whether to hire movers or move yourself largely depends on your budget, proximity to the new home, complexity of the move and your own personality. If you’re in good physical shape, have lots of friends also with the physical prowess, and you’re move is pretty simple and routine, by all means we encourage you to do it yourself. This gives you a little more flexibility and can save you some money.

Adam Meyer Moving & Storage can help with your DIY move as well. Our MI-BOX Portable Moving Containers are essentially the moving truck without the ramp. We can deliver and 8′ x 20′ secure, lockable container to your house or business, you pack it at your convenience, and we pick it up and deliver it to your destination. We can even store your container at our secure location until you’re ready to move.

Below are a few links to help you find some additional help and planning documents for your move.

Pennsylvania Utilities Commission – Household goods movers operating within Pennsylvania are required to be licensed by the Public Utility Commission and must maintain adequate levels of insurance coverage and charge fees approved by the PUC.

FMCSA – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration offers free resources and tools to help prepare for your move and to protect yourself from moving fraud.

Information For Shippers Form– Ensure you receive an Information for Shippers form prior to signing any agreements.

Your Rights & Responsibilities When You Move Brochure – a booklet from the Federal government that your mover is required to give you if you are moving from one state to another. This booklet also has information you’ll need if your goods are lost or damaged during the move.
